Abstract

[Extract] Why would one become an ethnographic filmmaker? It is this question that is pursued and discussed in Looking with Robert Gardner. Those who are familiar with Robert Gardner's work will appreciate this collection of writings, which, taken together, create a comprehensive body of filmic analyses, ideas, challenges, and reflections around the understanding of oneself through looking with others. The contributors to this book are academics, filmmakers, photographers, poets, sociologists, anthropologists, and film theorists. The book is divided into two parts and has 21 chapters in total. At the end, it features a comprehensive biographical sketch, filmography, and list of publications by and about Gardner. The first part is an overview, starting with a chapter by the writer, Eliot Weinberger. Weinberger's emphasis on aesthetics and the ethnographically informed content of Gardner's films is the focus of the chapters that follow. Part 2 looks at the individual films.
