Abstract

In this chapter, I discuss how various expectations, questions, interactions and events were attached to a Kamula narrative about the origin of death as it was transcribed in late 2019 in the village of Kamiyame in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). The transcription took place after the forestry industry had operated in the area for the last 20 years and, along with Christianity and White Australian colonialism, it had transformed people’s sense of self, security and what they desired for their future. The paper outlines how this narrative entered into a series of interactions primarily between myself and Kamula and how many of these interactions were attempts to make me more responsible to the Kamula, their history.
