Abstract

In today's world rapid social changes are accompanied by particular patterns of language change. The Doromu-Koki language of Papua New Guinea has for many years borrowed vocabulary and structures from the Hiri Motu and English languages of wider communication. But with the advent of new communication technologies these borrowings (and code-switches) are becoming more entrenched, and with these come changes to the grammar of the language, giving rise to new genres. These phenomena centre round clause-linking as a cohesive discourse device. As people adapt to new phenomena so do language speakers.
