Abstract

Regenerative tourism emphasizes tourism’s potential to be a means of achieving well-being, revitalization and sustainability. It not only aims to reduce negative impacts of tourism, but to benefit people and places. Regenerative tourism has gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic as a type of tourism that epitomizes ‘building back better’, an idea that tourism post-COVID-19 pandemic should maximise positive outcomes. Due to border closures, economies that have traditionally relied on cross-border mobilities have been among the most affected during the pandemic. One such region is SIJORI Growth Triangle, which includes Singapore, Johor (Malaysia) and Riau Archipelago (Indonesia). In such urban and resorts cross-border contexts, where primary focus has traditionally been on the economy rather than sustainability, establishing regenerative tourism is especially challenging. This working paper discusses collaborative and regenerative cross-border tourism in SIJORI post-pandemic, and proposes further research on the topic.
