Abstract

The economic growth experiences of major South Asian economies are to a large extent influenced by their respective political, bureaucratic and judicial systems. This paper focuses on Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Since gaining independence from the British colonial rule, the major South Asian economies have followed the same broad economic development policies. However, except for Sri Lanka, all major South Asian economies are still categorised as low income developing countries. The available data shows since the late I970s, except for Bangladesh, all major South Asian economies have experienced a significant increase in overall productivity. Statistical analysis over the period 1960-2002 shows that in over all terms there is a significant difference in the population means of GDP per person employed. The paper also attempts to forecast GDP per person employed in all major South Asian economies. Time series forecasting suggests that the recent steep growth is likely to continue in Bangladesh and India. Sri Lankan productivity appears to have reached its peak whereas Pakistan is likely to experience slow growth.
