Abstract
This chapter is about understanding the way specific culture/s informs the creation of our identity and sense of self, and aims to help you develop skills to interact respectfully and positively with cultures other than your own. Although there is diversity and subcultures within all cultures, the focus of this chapter is the distinct Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples of Australia. Two very disparate cultures collided when the British colonised/invaded Australia and introduced social concepts such as race. Social stratification based on a racial hierarchy is central to the ideology of colonisation (Muller, 2020). Appreciating how our lives as Australians are racialised in the colonisation process is a necessary step towards accepting and respecting differences between cultures, and the value this can give at a personal and professional level.
