Abstract

Adolescence is the peak developmental period during which alcohol use onset occurs in many countries across the world, with a median age of onset of 16–19 years. A small proportion of adolescents who consume alcohol go on to develop an alcohol use disorder (AUD), characterized by a pattern of alcohol use that can lead to significant impairment or distress. Problems associated with AUD include increased risk for motor vehicle accidents, decline in cognitive and academic functioning, antisocial behavior and legal problems, failing to fulfill major role obligations, and recurrent social or interpersonal problems. Overall, there is good evidence to suggest that preventive interventions to reduce alcohol use among high-school and college students can be effective. Based on the current literature, it appears that there is good evidence to support the use of eHealth interventions for reducing harmful drinking among adolescents, particularly those that include a personalized feedback component.
