Abstract
[Extract] The commentary by Jones et al. (2019) about neonatal abstinence syndrome/neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NAS/NOWs) assesses the challenges posed for research in NAS. It suggests that studies that use a diagnosis of NAS or NOWs as the main indicator of adverse developmental outcomes pose "potential radiating harm to the child and the family and misses the opportunity" to consider the impact of other adverse circumstances on the children's potential.
