Abstract

Underwater shipwreck sites off the Western Australian coast are, in many cases, situated in unique and challenging environments. The often hazardous and dynamic marine conditions, combined with the need for accurate recording, results in two essential criteria for under water archaeological recording: speed and accuracy.23 For over 40 years, archaeologists adapted and invented techniques for fast and accurate recording of these sites. Yee, these techniques did not always result in more accurate or faster recording ( e.g., photomosaics required hundreds of photos and hours of postprocessing). In recent years, the availability of affordable and user-friendly software programs enabled archaeologists co undertake complex computing and photogrammetry processes chat previously could only be completed by skilled specialises and, generally, at great expense.
