Abstract

[Extract] Ms. magazine became a cultural phenomenon and a voice of the women's movement during the 1970s. Its editorial team also, quite intentionally, ensured that it became a vibrant source of women's history. As editor Gloria Steinem wrote in its preview edition, inserted in New York magazine, "I have met brave women who are exploring the outer edge of possibility with no history to guide them, and a courage to make themselves vulnerable that I find moving beyond the words to express it." 1 Steinem, however, was well aware that some "brave women" were already contributing to political life. And, although her historical knowledge was still evolving, she recognized that the current upswing of women in politics built on the legacy of suffragist foremothers. For Steinem and the Ms. editorial team, women's political action and the recovery of women's history went together, offering a foundation for women's liberation.
