Abstract

[Extract] This special issue of OCMA complements and extends the diverse range of issues debated at the ECSA57 conference, "Changing estuaries, coasts and shelf systems – Diverse threats and opportunities", held in Perth in September 2018. A wide range of papers highlighted the threats posed to complex and fragile coastal ecosystems from natural and anthropogenic forces.

Many of the issues faced are complex, change-resistant challenges for which no single solution exists. These challenges are increasingly being termed 'wicked problems' (Head & Alford, 2015). Of particular concern is the potential impact of climate change, an issue that is receiving increased focus in both the public and academic media (Levin, Cashore, Bernstein, & Auld, 2012). It is recognised that mitigating its effects is challenging due to its complexity (Moser, Jeffress Williams, & Boesch, 2012) and it has been suggested that it should be classified as a 'super wicked problem' – that is, a problem with no single solution, no controlling authority able to address it and with little time for effective action (Levin et al., 2012; Reiter, Meyer, Parrott, Baker, & Grace, 2018).
