Abstract

The negative environmental effects caused by excessive plastic pollution have greatly affected emerging economies such as India, whose limited resources and low economic resilience make it particularly vulnerable. Given the environmental challenges associated with single-use plastics and the unorganized nature of its production, this chapter presents how India’s single-use disposables economy has transformed itself from a plastic-based economy to biomass-based plate ecosystem facing resource constraints. Based on qualitative interviews with 16 entrepreneurs—as key actors in the value chain—in the Indian state of Haryana, we examine the use of plant-based plates as an alternative of single-use plastic cutlery. The analyses provide insights into how naturally existing resources succumbed to climate change and an eventual change in consumer demands and deliver an entrepreneurial perspective of market forces leading to Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) innovations, advancing earlier BoP studies on theoretical concepts and policy impacts.
