Abstract

Flying Fish Point is located north of the Johnstone River mouth in Queensland, downstream of Innisfail in the Cassowary Coast Regional Council area, and has a well-documented history of shoreline erosion/recession. In response, Council has undertaken a variety of mitigation measures over time, including the construction of rock revetments. In early 2017, Council resolved to remediate the existing rock revetment from William to Ruby Street at Flying Fish Point due to poor structure condition. While the design and construction of conventional rock revetments is relatively established, the project became more unique based on requirements from Council to incorporate 'green engineering' design through the application of fish friendly features and other innovative measures. In response, Council and SMEC collaborated with James Cook University's TropWATER division during the revetment design process, with the view to increasing marine habitat and improving aesthetic and environmental values for the community. Council's designer, SMEC, faced a number of challenges throughout the project, ensuring enhanced environmental outcomes did not compromise structural function, performance and statutory tidal works requirements. This paper summarises the 'green engineering', fish friendly features and other innovative measures adopted during this project.
