Abstract
The link between tourism and the environment usually presents as tourism harming the environment. Innumerable studies have examined tourism’s predominantly negative impact on the environment. Environmental impact assessment instruments have been developed that, at present, in many parts of the world, form a mandatory part of a development application. On the other hand, research on the environment harming the traveler is scarce. Events are usually poorly documented, perhaps only as a short but sensational headline in the media, and many incidents go unreported. The paucity of detailed records often leaves insurance claims as the only basis for some understanding of the magnitude of environmental hazards for travelers. In addition, little information is made available by the tourism industry, as published events can damage the image of a location and affect sales.
