There have been significant increases in longevity over past centuries. In 2007, people aged 65 years and over made up 13% of Australia's population. This proportion is projected to increase to between 23% and 25% by 2056. Normal human ageing is associated with morphological and functional changes in nearly all organ systems. Since the incidence of polypharmacy and adverse drug outcomes increase with age, a knowledge of age-related physiological changes that may affect handling of and responses to drugs is essential for optimal drug therapy in the elderly.
