Abstract

The effect of low cycle fatigue (LCF) on subsequent high cycle fatigue (HCF) life and the fatigue crack growth rate was investigated. In a tensile specimen, a large number of LCF cycles results in a decrease in the subsequent HCF life. This suggests that damage by LCF causes a decrease in the HCF life. However, following a small number of LCF cycles at a particular LCF waveform, an increase of the HCF life was observed. The effect shows a sensitivity to the particular waveform chosen and the as-received condition of the material.
