Abstract
Applications of field- and computer-based technologies are integrated to delineate the vegetation distribution in the interior wetland basin of tropical Tasek Bera, Malaysia. The environment consists of physiographic and ecological wetland resources partly affected by anthropogenic activity (logging, clearcut, plantations, housing). The vegetational distribution of the basin, mapped in the field and transferred to aerial photos and topographic maps, is computed based on Landsat 5 TM imageries. Supervised classification was done on two satellite images, captured in December 1988 (monsoon-season) and May 1996 (inter-monsoon-season), to assess seasonal vegetation changes, in particular in the open water and littoral wetland areas. Overall accuracy of the supervised classification ranged between 76 and 86%, while the average separability of all classes ranged between 1.85 and 1.97. Comparison of the wetland environment of the two images shows that water level fluctuation markedly changes the numerical values. The open water perimeter changes up to 50% between the monsoon season (December 1988) and the inter-monsoon season (May 1996). In addition, environments with sedges and riparian lowland areas (shrubs and water bodies) were overprinted by neighboring vegetation thus influencing the "real" value of the zonal extent. Nevertheless, remote sensing proved to be a powerful tool in computing vegetational distribution, surveying, and interpreting the environment of remote wetland areas of the tropics.
