Abstract

[Extract] As readers are probably aware, the collection of islands, cays and reefs adjacent tothe Queensland coast for approximately 2600 kilometres — otherwise known as theGreat Barrier Reef — is currently the subject of some controversy. Expansions to anumber of Queensland ports, the continuing presence of Crown of Thorns Starfish, coral bleaching, ocean acidification, sedimentation, agricultural run-off and theimplications of global climate change all threaten this fragile natural wonder. Ifmuch of this concern and action takes place in the present, Iain McCalman’sThereef: A passionate history, invites us to cast our collective gaze to the past.
