Abstract

[Extract] In this section of the Handbook we return to the idea of the success story raised in the introduction: Is development in Southeast Asia creating more equitable, sustainable and empowering contexts for social worlds? As discussed in the Institutions and Economies section, the past few decades have witnessed the regional acquiescence to free market economics, with policies to promote regional integration and economic, political, social and cultural cooperation across Southeast Asian nations. These initiatives have integrated the region into broader regional and global markets in profound ways, but do the free flow of goods, services, labor and capital pro-vide new avenues for economic, social and political inclusion?
