Abstract

Construction of Hydraulic Water Retaining Structures (HWRS) is an important goal in developing a strong water management system for most communities. In addition to the dynamic and statistical structural analysis, the seepage analysis has critical influences on the candidate design of HWRS. The previously used closed form and approximation methods for seepage analysis are applicable to homogenous isotopic soils. However, the numerical solution provides accurate seepage analysis with a complex flow domain. This paper explores the effect of the hydraulic conductivity (K) and the anisotropy ratio (Ky/Kx) on the optimum hydraulic design of HWRS, utilizing the linked simulation-optimization (S-O) model approach. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) solver is linked with trained surrogate models to find the optimum solution at a minimum cost. The surrogate models are built based on a Support Vector Machine (SVM) technique, which are trained and tested by using several data sets simulated by the numerical seepage modelling code (SEEPW). The optimum solutions obtained by the S-O model show that the K value and Ky/Kx ratio have significant influences on the optimum design of HWRS. An evaluation of the method was conducted by comareing seepage design variables obtained for the optimum design via the S-O model, with those obtained as SEEPW solutions. These evaluations demonstrated a good match. Accordingly, the S-O methodology is shown to be potentially applicable for obtaining optimal design, while incorporating variable hydraulic conductivity and different anisotropic ratios for HWRS design.
