Abstract
Florence Boulard was born in Noumea, New Caledonia and migrated to Australia at age 16. In her early experiences with Australians, the dominant cultural hegemony associated with the French language regularly led others to the assumptions that she was from mainland France. As French Lecturer and Modern Languages Director at James Cook University, Florence’s teaching, research and community engagement focus on transforming people’s consciousness of the East. She aspires for a future in which all people and cultures of the East-side neighbours are visible for the benefit of Australians and Pacific Islanders alike. It is a proximal and tangible context for such attention. At a time when Australia’s political and economic focus is often to the North, Florence hopes that these words remind us not to forget the East with whom we share, not only a past, but also an inevitable interwoven future.
