Abstract

Set in the tumultuous political world of Tsarist repression and revolutionary intrigue in St Petersburg and Geneva, Under Western Eyes (1911) renders with searing intensity the psychological torment of its Russian protagonist, a university student who, in betraying another, has betrayed himself. Based upon a comparison of the existing manuscript and other materials, this scholarly and first extensively annotated edition of Joseph Conrad's great novel Under Western Eyes differs from all previous printings by more accurately reflecting Conrad's writing process. The reading text is supported by new scholarly materials that are the result of fifteen years of investigation: essays on the textual and biographical history of the novel, extensive notes, appendices and maps, as well as a full listing of the thousands of textual variants in the early forms of the novel, including the 18,000 words that Conrad himself deleted.

• The first extensively annotated edition, including historical, biographical, contextual annotations • Full listing of textual variants in the early forms of the novel, including retrieval of the 18,000 words Conrad deleted during revision • An MLA Approved Edition, MLA Committee on Scholarly Editions

Research Statement

Research Background Joseph Conrad is widely considered one of the most important novelists of the 20th century. Works such as Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness, Nostromo, and The Secret Agent, are central to the modernist canon, and all have attracted significant critical and scholarly attention. Under Western Eyes completes Conrad’s ‘major period’ with a political novel of terrorism and terrorists that resonates to this day.
Research Contribution This Critical edition of Under Western Eyes follows the well-established procedures and organization of the other volumes in the acclaimed Cambridge University Press series, offering an authoritative critical text with an apparatus listing emendations and variants; explanatory and textual notes; a glossary of foreign terms; appendices; illustrations derived from the preprint documents and the historical texts; and a map of late-nineteenth century Geneva relevant to the setting
Research Significance The edition presents a reliable edition of Under Western Eyes, correcting and recording errors in transmission and editorial intervention to produce a reading text as close as possible to the one that Conrad expected. In addition, a full historical list of variation is provided, allowing readers unprecedented access to more than 20,000 words that Conrad struck from the typescript during revision, and the thousands of alternative readings found in manuscripts, serialisations, and book editions. The reading text, the Essay on the text, and the scholarly apparatus combine to produce a detailed argument about the processes and product that we know as Under Western Eyes. As a sign of its position in the field, the edition has been awarded the seal of the Modern Language Association’s Committee on Scholarly Editions.
