Abstract

A superficial view of the treatment of acute pain suggests that it should not be problematic, given the array of chemical analgesics available and the clearly prescribed role of doctors and nurses in minimising pain. yet the clinical picture is very different. Most reviews show that even in advanced teaching hospitals patients report considerable post-surgical pain. The presence of significant postoperative pain has been interpreteted as evidence of poor pain management. This paper reports a study that indicated that it is not necessarily the case.
