Abstract

This article addresses professional and personal survival strategies for social workers in mining and rural communities. Professional survival is seen as being dependent on effective community education for which six strategies are outlined. Personal survival is presented as being dependent on stress management and actively countering vulnerability to burnout. The principles discussed can be applied to any social work or community work position in a rural or mining community.
