Abstract
The motivation for this paper came from a reference to Jivaro(=Shuar) in the World Atlas of Language Structures (WALS).There, in the chapter on 'Order of Adjective and Noun' (Dryer2011), Jivaro is listed as one of those languages in which [Adj N]is the usual order. In contrast, my own data on Aguaruna showthat [N Adj] is the basic order (Overall 2007). Given the very close similarities among Jivaroan languages, this variance in adjective-noun ordering is surprising, and demands an explanation. In the course of the paper I offer a diachronic explanation for the discrepancy, and consider some related issues arising from thedata. The structure of the paper is as follows: the remainder of § 1provides a typological overview of the Jivaro an languages. In §2 I present the problem in detail, along with a survey of relevant details from published grammatical descriptions of the Jivaroan languages. I then propose a historical change, and by way of evidence I give an overview of the NP in Aguaruna (representing the Jivaroan family as a whole) in §3, and describe the historical scenario in detail in§4. Finally, in §5, I discuss some wider typological implications.
