Abstract
On the 200th anniversary of British colonisation in Australia, the Sydney Biennale exhibited an installation by artists from the remote Rarningining community in central Arnhem Land. The installation, entitled Aboriginal Memorial 1988, consisted of 200 painted Hollow Log coffins, which are used in the community to inter the bones of those who have died. After an extensive period of ceremony, the bones of the deceased are cleaned, painted and placed in a naturally hollowed out log. The logs are painted with traditional totemic images and designs. The installation was a powerful memorial, during a year of Bicentennial celebra¬tions, for Aboriginal people who had died during colonisation, with each Hollow Log rep¬resenting a year of colonial occupation. The Aboriginal Memorial 1988 captures many of the themes that underpin this chapter. While the artists used a traditional art form with deep cultural significance and meaning, the collective message of the installation was profoundly political and contemporary.
