Abstract

The backbone of a profitable beef or dairy operation lies in good management which in turn depends on complete and accurate record keeping. Even the smallest herd cannot be run efficiently without some simple records. However, records should not just be kept. for keeping sake unless there is a definite intention of keeping them properly for a definite use. The desirable characteristics of a herd recording system are that it be simple, accurate, complete, up-to-date, understandable and easy to keep.
