Abstract

[Extract] In Indonesia, buffaloes and cattle are normally subjected to draught loads of 400 to 600 Newtons (see Bakrie 1991). It was suggested by Martin and Teleni (1989) that a trained buffalo could sustain a draught load, equivalent to 11% of its live weight, for 3 h while walking continuously at a constant speed of 0.69 m/sec. While this capacity would easily allow buffaloes and cattle with live weights of 300 kg or greater, to cope with the draught loads normally experienced during the ploughing seasons, it is likely to be critical in the smaller size animals such as Bali and Madura cattle.

Bali cattle is the main breed of cattle distributed to farmers in the transmigration areas of Indonesia (see Komarudin-Ma'sum & Teleni 1991). Their work and other productive performances are therefore extremely important to the development of land and prosperity of farmers in these areas.

The study described here was undertaken to compare the work capacity of Bali cattle with those of Ongole and Madura cattle, the other two main breeds of cattle in Indonesia.
