Abstract

The open source community is vast worldwide software development resource. When combined, the developers of this community are capable of continuous year-round software development. Regardless, creating modern software that meets customer expectations and produces quality outcomes is a complex task. The interplay between problem domain and requirements analysis, solution design and implementation, teamwork and project management are difficult to coordinate. As a result, software developers rely on a variety of development processes that support software development by enabling productive developmental cycles. This paper aims to highlight an opportunity for the strategic combine of agile development with open source software development. We suggest a way forward is to identify ways of combining agile principles, practices, and processes to better coordinate the diverse skillset of the open source community.
