Abstract

[Extract] In Australia, life expectancy for females has risen from 60 years in 1900 to 83 years in the year 2006, and for males from 55 to 79 years. The proportion of the population over 65 years has risen from 4% in 1900 to 13%, and may reach 25°1<) by the middle of this century. The trend is reflected in other Western countries. Infections cause substantial morbidity and mortality in the elderly, and their management poses unique challenges.
