Abstract
[Extract] Endocarditis is an inflammatory condition affecting the endocardium. Its characteristic feature is a 'vegetation' that starts as a platelet thrombus on one or more of the internal structures, usually a valve. In most cases it is caused by bacterial infection and accompanied by bacteraemia. Possible complications include valve destruction, perivalvular abscess and/or embolic phenomena. Untreated, the mortality approaches 100%.
