Abstract

[Extract Spanish] A língua Warekena é uma língua indigena ameaçada de extinção que pertence à família lingüística Aruak, falada por apenas uma dúzia dos adultos, no rio Xiê (nas nove comunidades: Vila Nova, Campinas, Yuku, Nazaré, Kumati-cachoeira, Tonu, Umaritiwa, Tokana Anamoim). Todos os falantes estão com mais de 50 anos de idade, e são bilíngiies em Língüa Geral (Nhêengatú). A língua Warekena não está sendo usada como uma língua de comunicação diária. A maioria dos descendentes usam também Português, e Espanhol; muitos parecem conhecer a língua Kurripako (v. Aikhenvald 1998: 226-7).

[Extract English] The Warekena language is an endangered language from the Arawak language family, spoken by about a dozen older people along the river Xié (in nine communities: Vila Nova, Campinas, Yuku, Nazare, Kumai-cachoeira, Tonu, Umaritiwa, Tokana Anamoim). All the speakers are older than 59, and all are bilingual in Lingua Geral (Nhhengatu). The Warekena language is not being used as a language of daily communication. The majority of the descendants also know Portuguese and Spanish. Many seem to be familiar with the Kurripako language’
