Abstract

[Extract] Aboriginal people in some communities in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory (NT), continue to use kava despite more than twenty years of controversy about its health and social consequences. This article summarises the evidence available to inform this issue, and describes the response made by NT governments to minimise the harmful effects of kava abuse. The article also outlines an important new study to monitor the associated health risks of continued kava use.
