Abstract
[Extract] This chapter is designed to present to the reader the raison d'etre for this handbook, including the legal and ethical issues underlying prescription and monitoring of medications for the physiotherapist. It also introduces some basic pharmacology and pharmacokinetic concepts, and discusses some of the common methods of administration and monitoring of medications. Since the autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays an important role in the activity of all body systems, and as such in all pharmacotherapeutic interventions, an introduction to the basic physiology of this system has also been included in this chapter.
This handbook has not been designed as a pharmaceutical textbook or a physiotherapy textbook for interventions for specific conditions. Rather, it is a quick guide to enable physiotherapists to have a better understanding of the medications that their patients may be prescribed and how they (the medications) may impact upon the treatment given by the physiotherapist, and vice versa.
