Abstract
The challenge in sustainable tourism research in practice is not only how to measure or assess the achievement of sustainability, but also how to implement such. A current trend in both practice and research is to consider the conduct of ecotourism, or nature based tourism, as a means to achieve the concepts of sustainable tourism. This research proposes that one of the avenues that so called ecotourism operations may contribute to aspects of sustainability is through the interpretation delivered as an integral component of this sort of nature based tourism. An applied methodological approach is presented with a model of effective interpretation. This model is called The Value Model of Interpretation and is intended to suggest interpretive activity features and pathways that will most likely lead to value based responses from the participants. The premise of the model and approach is that certain interpretive program outcomes need to be facilitated and recognised by participants to enable them to identifY these personally significant values. The values may be directly in relation to their environment or have other personally significance, but have been elicited as a result of the interpretive activities in which they participated. It is only when newly acquired or enhanced knowledge and experience takes on personal psychological significance in the form of values or beliefs that interpretation can be considered to be effective with respect to achieving sustainable tourism concepts.
