Abstract
Manual handling training is a strategy utilised to prevent injuries through appropriate use of safe manual handling techniques. The research aimed to develop a checklist to assess manual handling techniques involving inanimate objects and to identify factors which impact its use in a workplace setting. The Manual Handling Competency Checklist (the Checklist) was developed using current guidelines and research into safe manual handling techniques. The Checklist was tested using video footage of workers performing cleaning tasks and it contains six sections: administration, four manual handling components and an outcome section. The Checklist can be used as a tool to assess manual handling techniques in a workplace setting. Additional uses for the Checklist include the analysis of workplace tasks in order to: identify manual handling risks within the workplace, tailor training to the specific needs of the workplace and implement higher levels of control.
