Abstract

Since 1975 the number of working-holiday-makers (WHMs) visiting Australia have grown considerably. The Australian Holiday-Working-Visa has allowed WHMs to obtain work in Australia. Agreements with twenty different countries worldwide have facilitated this unique, short-term, multicultural workforce, with varying skill-levels and work attitudes. This additional work pool has added value to the Australian labour market, and has helped to drive a backpacker industry within Australia.

A web-based company termed XYZ.com to protect its privacy, is developing a convenient customer-focused pathway for WHMs to source work related activities within Australia. This paper highlights key on-line deliverables applicable to WHMs, and it indicates some ways XYZ.com may better target this mobile customer market. XYZ.com targets delivering personal CV’s and on-line job options to its WHMs. It also delivers a workforce to its regional business customers. Empirical research indicates that in the tropical regions of North Queensland Australia are appealing to the WHMs from the US, Ireland, the UK, Europe and New Zealand.

Today WHMs research well and they seek improved information and services - including job options, region specific information, health and travel insurance, transportation, accommodation, communication exchanges and access to supporting testimonials. Provision of such service gives an on-line web business an improved alignment to its specific customer base. Furthermore, quality web-design and sophisticated technologies that assist WHMs in their information and decision making activities may encourage greater use of such targeted services websites.
