Abstract

Youth suicide continues to be a major social issue within our communities. Youths' help-seeking behaviour tends to be peer-based. In order for adults to play a significant role in helping to reduce youth suicide, it is important that evidence-based prevention efforts be made available to parent groups. The current study was interested in developing a psycho-educational presentation for parents that would be delivered at Parents and Citizen (P&C) meetings throughout the Far North Queensland region. The aim of the study was to evaluate its effectiveness using a 2 (time ie before and after presentation) x 2 (group ie control and prevention groups) factorial design. For this pilot study fifteen participants (4 males and 11 females) were randomly assigned to either the control group (wellness presentation) or the prevention group (life parents and community suicide prevention presentation). Both presentations consisted of a 20 minute presentation with accompanying power-point slides. Besides some demographic items, the measures at Time 1 and 2 included several knowledge items. There were a number of significant results found for knowledge of suicide, knowledge of suicidal risk factors, and how comfortable the participants felt in helping someone thinking of suicide, between the control and experimental groups at Time 2. There was a statistically significant difference between control and experimental groups for how helpful they found the workshop.
