Abstract

[Extract] Cognitive interventions have their historical beginnings in the disciplines of education and psychology. Pediatric occupational therapists have begun to realize the effectiveness of cognitive approaches with children who experience various developmental disabilities. These intervention approaches are often referred to as performance based approaches and also have been called top down approaches in the occupational therapy literature. The focus of performance-based approach is to assist the client in identifying, developing, and utilizing cognitive strategies to perform activities of daily living. Currently, in the pediatric occupational therapy practice, two main cognitive approaches are being used: cognitive approaches that attempt to change faulty or delayed cognitive processes, such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and cognitive approaches that enable occupational performance, such as the Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance (CO-OP) approach.
