Abstract

Nutrient timing: We know that nutrient timing is critical to gaining mass (2) and those of us who are serious about our training follow some type of nutrient timing protocol. While bodybuilders have been following a 3-step nutrient timing approach for years (pre-exercise; during; and post-exercise) details of how to use this were not reported until 2004. It is crazy that it can take so long for some sporting bodies and organisations to discover the benefits of nutrient timing protocols that bodybuilders have been following for years. It is a bit like science has taken 20 years to actually support increasing protein intake when you are lifting heavy stuff.

The Science: In 2011 a study was performed by one of Australia's leading sports scientists, Dr Stephen Bird, and his crew at Charles Sturt University. What made this study so different and important in the supplement world is that it was one of the first to feature supplementation pre-, during AND post-exercise. There have been loads of studies on pre-, post- or during (or a combination of the two); but not a complete study examining the 3-step approach.
