Abstract

[Extract] The New America&dquo; Cultural Sociology is an impressive anthology of recent essays by sociologists of 'culture', selected by its editor to document 'a distinctive, new, American tradition in cultural sociology' (p. 1). The 'new' in the title refers to a newfound appreciation for the importance of culture amongst American sociologists. The project aims to map this new development by providing readers with an appreciation of how American cultural sociology differs from competing modes of socio-cultural inquiry; and, a selection of 'exemplary'-no doubt soon-to-be 'classic'-texts which attest to the diversity and depth of research been carried out.
