Abstract
[Extract] Obesity is a national health problem in Australia. Queensland has the highest rates of obesity with adults living in regional areas showing higher rates compared to those living in major cities.1 Weight gain and the associated risk of cardiovascular disease increases dramatically in postmenopausal women. In 1998, three Australian women died every hour from cardiovascular disease.2 In addition. more than 80% of Australian women aged 55 years or older have at least one major identifiable risk factor. It appears that a reduction in activity at this time of life causes a decrease in muscle mass and a concomitant decrease in metabolic rate thus resulting in weight gain.
