Abstract

Key Findings:

1. Annual monitoring results show seagrasses in the Port of Karumba were in a very good condition in 2014 with biomass (density), distribution (area) and reproductive capacity all at their highest values since the program began in 1994.

2. Results of the seagrass monitoring indicate that Karumba's marine environment was in a healthy condition.

3. River flow, rainfall, temperature, global solar exposure and tidal exposure, were below their long-term averages creating a climate likely to be favourable for seagrass growth.

4. The good condition of seagrass indicates that anthropogenic activities that occurred in Karumba and the port including dredging, had minimal impact to the seagrass in 2014 and the meadow had good resilience against future short-term impacts.

5. The condition of seagrasses in Karumba is similar to seagrass in other monitoring locations in the Torres Strait and Gulf of Carpentaria, but is in contrast to many seagrass areas on Queensland's east coast that remain significantly impacted by major climate events during 2010/2011 and are yet to have fully recovered.
