Abstract

Lifelong learning recognises that learning takes place throughout life and in a range of situations. The Papua New Guinea (PNG) Vision 2050 policy document calls for a major transformation in the way Papua New Guineans think, interact with one another and do business now and into the future. It urges all government systems, institutions, the private sector and communities and all citizens to shift from a dependency and inadequacy (scarcity) mentality and adopt an independent and wealthy (abundance) mentality. Lifelong learning principles if taken seriously could effect the strategic changes aimed for in the PNG Vision 2050 in order to meet the technological, informational, social, political and economical challenges facing PNG today. This paper argues that changes need to be made in the PNG education system to encourage the use of lifelong learning as a policy goal in education to change the mindsets of its citizens.
