Abstract

[Extract] According to Robert Graves, "There is one story and one story only! That will prove worth your telling" (1-2). According to Joseph Campbell, it concerns the hero with a thousand faces, and George Lucas seems bent on proving that they are all the same. In fantasy, however, the hero has been, if not evolving, at least changing slightly. Here I want to consider variations in the older fantasy hero figure, firstly with depictions of Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings, and then with Lois McMaster Bujold's protagonist, Lupe dy Cazaril, in her 2001 novel, The Curse of Chalion".
