Abstract

[Danish] Ingen kan komme uden om døden. Det er et universelt livsvilkår. Og vi kan heller ikke bare slippe vore nærmeste, når de dør. I næsten alle samfund og kulturer har man en forestilling om, at der sker noget med den døde efter døden. De døde fortsætter på en måde deres liv i forskellige former. Det kan være i form af erindring og betydningsfulde genstande, som folk gemmer og hæger om; det kan være store monumentale bygninger, som den afdødes navn knyttes til; eller det kan være i form af direkte indblanding i de levendes liv eller dialog med de levende. Nok er den fysiske død universel, men hvad døden egentlig er, og hvordan de dødes efterliv former sig, bliver opfattet helt forskelligt i forskellige kulturer og til forskellige tider.

[English] Death is a universal condition of life. But we cannot just forget our relatives when they die. In almost all societies people believe that there happens something with the dead after death and that there is some continuation of their existence. But the nature of this continuity has many different cultural and material shapes: from personal memory and the preservation of things and material remains to the experience of the active agency of the dead. Here we investigate how the very different cultural practices nevertheless refer to the same existential paradoxes: How can the physical dissolution of the body be reconciled with a belief in a continuing existence? How can the experience of loss and grief be transformed into hope and renewal? How can the absence of the dead create new presence?
