Abstract

[Extract Danish] Døden har altid været til stede i den søfartskultur, jeg kommer fra. Mange mænd kom aldrig hjem, fordi de druknede på havet, og det var kvinder, som kørte butikken pa land. Søfolk var overtroiske. Man talte til de døde, og de døde talte til en. De afdøde var meget nærværende ved spisebordet og i samtalernes forløb". Ordene kommer fra Hans Krull, en velkendt dansk billedkunstner, som er bosat i Lystrup ved Aarhus. Mange af hans værker, blandt andet det berømte gavlmaleri Magekysset, pynter Aarhus' gader. Hans stammer fra en gammel Sømands- og kunstnerslægt fra Marstal på Ærø, og han har beskæftiget sig indgående med døden i sin kunst.

[Extract English] This article is a dialogue with the artist Hans Krull, whose sculpture ‘The angel with just one wing’ is part of the exhibition ‘The life of the dead’ at Moesgaard Museum (2014-2020). We touch on the meaning of ritual for coping with loss and grief, on the importance of ethnography and knowing other cultures, and on the new role of ethnographic museums and museums in general in a more and more secularised world.
