Abstract

[Extract English] In Manus the spirits of the dead are a part of daily life. This is something I have known since 1986, when I began my fieldwork on the small Island of Baluan in Manus Province, Papua New Guinea. And still, what is it really that I have known so far? My knowledge derived primarily from interviews and observations, which led me to conclude that Baluan people ascribe special powers and agency to their ancestors. But did I really know what it means to live in a world populated with ancestral spirits? I do not think so. A number of recent events enabled me to better approach the phenomenological dimension of a world in which the spirits of the ancestors play a crucial part. In this article I describe the events as well as their ethnographic and theoretical import.
