Abstract
In the recent times, there has been an increased focus in using a strengths-based perspective in many fields of practice, especially social work, nursing, mental health and education, to name a few. While there has been much discussion about using this approach in various contexts, little however has been explored in relation to how this modality can be employed in the criminal justice system to address mental health concerns. Strengths-based practice is not about discounting the existing problems of the mentally ill offenders but rather is an approach to view things differently through a lens of positivity and an attitude of optimism and hope. This chapter looks at the ways in which these principles can be applied in the criminal justice system and in particular, to address mental health issues. Based on the existing literature, critical reflections and active engagement with practitioners from the field, the authors have articulated a number of key ideas and suggestions on how practical strategies may be implemented in this specific context of practice.
