Abstract

[Extract] This chapter provides a set of reflections on visiting western China. This part of China has some physically and culturally stunning locations and is relatively unexplored by international tourists. My travel reflections focus especially on actual incidents with strangers and colleagues. The dominant academic theme underlying these incidents is the variety and complexity of cross cultural contact. The incidents speak to the achievements and the mystery of understanding others as well as oneself. The events have their managerial and personal implications and ultimately reveal the benefits of travel and tourism.
